Obama Does Ad for Gavin Newsom on Redistricting – Accuses Republicans of Trying to ‘Rig’ the Next Election (VIDEO)

Former President Obama just can’t seem to stay out of the spotlight. Despite leaving office over four years ago, he continues to make headlines and insert himself into the political arena. His latest move? An ad for California Governor Gavin Newsom, in which he accuses Republicans of trying to “rig” the next election through redistricting.

The ad, released by Newsom’s campaign on Tuesday, features Obama speaking directly to the camera. He begins by praising Newsom’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying, “Gavin Newsom has shown what strong, progressive leadership looks like.” He goes on to highlight Newsom’s accomplishments, such as expanding healthcare and fighting for climate change action.

But then, Obama takes a sharp turn and accuses Republicans of trying to “rig” the next election. He claims that they are using redistricting to manipulate the voting process and maintain their power. “They’re trying to keep their grip on power by changing the rules,” Obama says in the ad. “It’s not fair. It’s not right. And it’s not what democracy is about.”

This is not the first time Obama has spoken out against redistricting. In 2019, he launched the “All On The Line” campaign, which aims to end gerrymandering and ensure fair elections. The campaign is a part of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which Obama chairs.

But why is Obama getting involved in a state-level race? Some may argue that it’s because California is a Democratic stronghold and Newsom is facing a recall election in September. However, Obama’s involvement goes beyond party politics. He has always been a vocal advocate for fair elections and has consistently spoken out against voter suppression tactics.

In the ad, Obama also praises Newsom for his efforts to expand voting rights in California, such as automatic voter registration and same-day voter registration. He urges Californians to vote “no” on the recall and to support Newsom’s leadership.

Republicans have already fired back at Obama’s ad, calling it a desperate attempt to save Newsom’s failing governorship. They argue that it is Newsom’s own policies and actions, such as his handling of the pandemic and rising crime rates, that have led to the recall effort.

But regardless of the political back-and-forth, Obama’s message in the ad is clear: redistricting should not be used as a tool for political gain. It is a tactic that has been used by both parties, but ultimately harms the democratic process and undermines the will of the people.

Obama’s involvement in this ad also highlights the ongoing influence he has in the Democratic party. Despite being out of office for years, he continues to be a highly respected and influential figure within the party. His endorsement and support can make a significant impact in elections, as seen in the 2020 presidential race.

Some may argue that Obama should stay out of politics and let the current administration handle things. But as a former president, he has a unique perspective and a responsibility to speak out on issues that he believes are important for the future of our democracy.

In the end, Obama’s ad for Newsom is not just about one governor’s race in California. It is a reminder that our democracy is fragile and must be protected. Redistricting should not be used as a political weapon, and every citizen’s right to vote should be safeguarded. As Obama says in the ad, “We’ve got to fight back against these efforts to undermine our democracy.” And that is a message that should resonate with all Americans, regardless of party affiliation.
